The patients I worry about most aren’t the ones who come in when they’re sick. It’s the ones who only come in when they’re sick. Because by the time symptoms appear, a condition has often been building for years — silently, asymptomatically, doing damage that a simple lab panel would have caught much earlier.

Your yearly checkup is the single most effective preventive medicine tool available. At Sophia Rahman MD in Plano, TX, we make sure it’s comprehensive — not a 10-minute box-checking exercise.

What’s Included in a Comprehensive Yearly Checkup

Complete Physical Examination

We do a head-to-toe physical that covers:

  • Cardiovascular exam — heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure, peripheral pulses
  • Pulmonary exam — lung sounds, respiratory effort
  • Abdominal exam — organ size, tenderness, bowel sounds
  • Neurological screening — reflexes, coordination, cognitive screening where indicated
  • Skin exam — looking for lesions, changes, or concerns
  • Lymph node assessment

Health History Review

We review your family history, current medications, recent changes in your health, lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, sleep, stress, substance use), and any symptoms you’ve noticed. This context shapes everything else we do in the visit.

Screening Tests

Based on your age, sex, and individual risk factors, we order appropriate labs and screenings:

  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (kidney, liver, electrolytes)
  • Lipid panel (cholesterol)
  • Blood glucose and HbA1c
  • Thyroid function (TSH)
  • Additional tests based on your specific risk profile

Cancer Screenings

We ensure you’re up to date on age- and risk-appropriate cancer screenings:

  • Colonoscopy or stool-based colorectal cancer screening
  • Mammogram (women 40+ or earlier based on risk)
  • Pap smear and HPV co-test (women, per current guidelines)
  • PSA test (men, based on shared decision-making)
  • Lung cancer screening with low-dose CT (for eligible smokers)

Vaccination Review

We check which immunizations are current and which are due, including:

  • Annual influenza vaccine
  • COVID-19 booster status
  • Shingles vaccine (Shingrix, recommended 50+)
  • Pneumococcal vaccine (recommended 65+)
  • Tdap booster
  • Others based on travel, occupation, or health status

Personalized Health Plan

Every checkup ends with a clear, written plan — what we found, what we’re monitoring, what we’re treating, and what we want to accomplish before your next annual visit.

Medicare Initial and Annual Wellness Visits

If you’re on Medicare, you have specific wellness visit benefits that are distinct from a standard physical:

Welcome to Medicare (Initial Preventive Physical Examination) Available once within the first 12 months of Part B enrollment. Covers a health risk assessment, physical measurements, screening schedules, and preventive service review.

Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) Covered yearly after the first 12 months of Medicare. Focuses on updating your health risk assessment and personalized prevention plan. Notably, the AWV does not include a complete physical exam — it’s complementary to, not a replacement for, a comprehensive physical.

We’ll help you understand which visit type is appropriate for your Medicare coverage and ensure you get the full benefit of what’s available to you.

Why Every Year — Not Just When Something’s Wrong

Chronic conditions that are among the leading causes of death — heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain cancers — are frequently asymptomatic until they’re advanced. Regular annual visits let us:

  • Track your numbers over time and spot trends before they become problems
  • Catch conditions early when they’re most treatable
  • Build a relationship where I know your baseline, your history, and what’s normal for you
  • Update your preventive care plan as guidelines evolve and your health status changes

The year you skip is often the year something starts. Don’t give it a head start.
