Why Your Annual Physical Is More Important Than You Think
Dr. Sophia Rahman explains what happens at a comprehensive annual physical in Plano, TX, what tests are included, and why preventive care is the most powerful tool for long-term health.
I hear it all the time: “I feel fine — do I really need a checkup?”
Yes. And here’s why.
Most of the conditions I treat daily — high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid disease — develop silently. By the time patients feel symptoms, the disease has often been progressing for years. Your annual physical is designed to catch these problems before they cause damage.
What Happens at a Comprehensive Annual Physical?
A thorough physical at Sophia Rahman MD is not a 10-minute in-and-out. Here’s what we cover:
Medical History Review
We go through your family history, current medications, lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, sleep, stress), and any concerns or symptoms you’ve noticed since your last visit.
Physical Examination
Head-to-toe assessment including:
- Cardiovascular exam (heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure)
- Pulmonary exam (lung sounds)
- Abdominal exam
- Neurological screening
- Skin exam
- Lymph node assessment
Lab Work
We order a comprehensive metabolic panel, complete blood count, lipid panel, thyroid function, blood glucose/HbA1c, and other tests based on your age, sex, and risk factors.
Preventive Screenings
Based on current clinical guidelines, we’ll ensure you’re up to date on:
- Cancer screenings (colonoscopy, mammogram, Pap smear, PSA)
- Immunizations (flu, COVID, shingles, pneumonia, Tdap)
- Blood pressure and diabetes screening
- Osteoporosis screening (for eligible patients)
EKG (When Indicated)
We have on-site EKG capability for cardiac screening in appropriate patients.
Why Preventive Care Saves Money and Lives
Studies consistently show that patients who receive regular preventive care have:
- Lower rates of hospitalization
- Earlier detection of cancers, when they’re most treatable
- Better management of chronic conditions, preventing expensive complications
- Lower long-term healthcare costs
An annual physical is one of the highest-ROI investments you can make in your health.
What About My Chronic Conditions?
If you’re already managing hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, or another chronic condition, your annual physical is even more important. We track your trends over time, adjust medications as needed, and monitor for complications.
At Sophia Rahman MD, we also offer Remote Patient Monitoring — home devices for blood pressure, glucose, and heart rate that transmit data to our office between visits. This lets us catch problems between appointments and intervene sooner.
Who Should Be Seen Annually?
All adults. But especially:
- Anyone over 40
- Patients with a family history of heart disease, diabetes, or cancer
- Anyone managing a chronic condition
- Patients who are overweight or have metabolic risk factors
- Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
A Note on Medicare Wellness Visits
If you’re on Medicare, you’re entitled to an Annual Wellness Visit at no cost. This is distinct from a traditional physical and focuses on preventive planning and screenings. We offer both and will help you understand which is appropriate for your coverage.
Don’t wait until something feels wrong. Schedule your annual physical today and let’s build a health baseline that protects you for years to come.
